Wow, what an incredible night! A huge thank you to Wow, what an incredible night! A huge thank you to everyone who came out to @beachhappycafe last night for the premiere of our new mini-documentary, 'EDUCATE: The Power of Student Sponsorship in Africa". We did multiple screenings of the film, and the feedback and support we received was fantastic. Many thanks to @2030north for creating this wonderful film, and the good folks at @hey30a for their support of this event. Shout-out to Kurt Freudenreich (@walkingforwells )for joining us with his backpack ready to go as he leaves for the Ouachita National Recreation Trail today to hike 223 miles with the goal of sponsoring 50 students. Also, big love to our volunteers from @360_blue 😊

Here are some photos and videos from the night courtesy of the wonderful @hollydeevine . We plan to continue to screen the mini-documentary before we release it more publicly - stay tuned for other viewing opportunities!
One of the unique aspects of The Sonder Project's One of the unique aspects of The Sonder Project's sponsorship program is how closely our local staff gets to know the families of the students we sponsor. We love meeting parents who prioritize and encourage their child's educational development once they are sponsored. Despite the fact that many of the parents have not completed high school, and face extreme poverty, we can feel their dedication to ensuring their daughter or son is successful in the program. The excitement parents feel knowing that their child will be the first in their family to complete high school is so inspiring - it's one of the things that keeps us going!

We can't wait for the live premiere of 'EDUCATE', We can't wait for the live premiere of 'EDUCATE', our new mini-documentary about our student sponsorship program, coming up on Thursday this week! In the meantime, we'd love to share another short preview clip to give you a taste of the film. In this clip, our Malawi Country Director, Beria Michembo speaks about our approach to visiting every single one of our sponsorship candidates with their families in their home villages in order to fully comprehend their challenges, and to form tight and lasting bonds with them. Our staff on the ground are equipped with motorbikes to be able to visit even the most remote villages where we work, often times hiking rough terrain to complete their visits and interviews. We are so proud of our team, and the amazing work of @2030north , who produced, filmed, and edited this wonderful film. Enjoy this clip, and we hope to see you at the premiere on Thursday at @beachhappycafe in 30A!

(Part 1 / 4) Daniel Kalumbi was just starting Grad (Part 1 / 4) Daniel Kalumbi was just starting Grade 10, but he already had his future mapped out. As a precocious lover of math, physics, and chemistry, Daniel was eager to finish high school and pursue a career in engineering. His older brother had dropped out of high school before completing Grade 12, but Daniel was determined to follow a different path. Daniel is from the village of Kasikidzi in the Kasungu district of Malawi, where the population relies on subsistence and ‘piece works’ farming. He was able to get by with the support of his parents, but all of that changed when his father left.

(Part 2 / 4) Daniel’s mother, Matilda, was left (Part 2 / 4) Daniel’s mother, Matilda, was left to support her 4 sons, but she couldn’t manage it on her own, as she was earning between $2 - $4 per day doing 'piece-works; farming, or farming on someone else’s land. Daniel’s high school cost around $90 per term, or $270 per year, so it was simply not possible for Daniel to continue school until he and his mother were able to save enough money to afford tuition. Eventually, Daniel was chased away from school, and was forced to drop out of school in Grade 10 and later again in Grade 11 due to a lack of school fees. Daniel’s education was blocked by poverty.
