🚫 Not all wells are created equal! As we asse 🚫 Not all wells are created equal! As we assess new areas to construct deep-water wells, we often find inadequate existing water sources. Sometimes these may be shallow wells or open water sources like a stream or hand-dug holes. And sometimes we find a closed water pump that looks similar to what The Sonder Project typically constructs, but don't be fooled! What you observe in this video is an unfortunately common situation with wells in Malawi & Burkina Faso that were drilled in the past by other organizations. The women in the video have been pumping forcefully for several minutes, but little to no water was coming out. That's because many of these wells were not drilled with the community, or sustainability, in mind! This particular well in Rounde community, Burkina Faso, is likely not drilled into a viable aquifer to provide a long-term clean water source. Moreover, this lone well is serving more than 1,600+ people within the surrounded area, far more than recommended. So how did this happen? Usually it results from a lack of oversight and a drill team that is more interested in getting paid than ensuring a long-term, sustainable water source. Sara has been involved in our efforts to strengthen our Student Sponsorship program through better data collection, and deeper relationship-building with our sponsored students, their families, and our partner schools. As a mother to two boys herself, she understands deeply the importance of developing a young person's confidence. And as a graduate in Media For Development, Sara has also proven to be a thoughtful storyteller of the personal impact on beneficiaries from our partner communities. Coming soon - exciting updates from our community Coming soon - exciting updates from our community farm in Burkina Faso! Over the past year, we have been exploring new ways to store and distribute water to ensure accessibility and sustainability for our individual farmers, and we are excited to share our solution. Stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, our farm members have been busy planting nurseries of peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants to prepare for the upcoming rainy season starting in a few weeks. We can't wait to see the harvest in a few months! The objective of our community farm is to improve food security for the local community. But what exactly do we mean by 'food security'? While food security focuses on availability and access to nutritious food, it is also about promoting sustainable agricultural practices, safeguarding biodiversity, and minimizing environmental degradation. With nearly 250 million people in sub-Saharan Africa suffering from chronic malnourishment, and food insecurity 4x higher than other parts of the world (World Hunger, 2018), finding ways to solve these challenges will directly improve poverty alleviation efforts for millions of people. Food security is also tightly linked to our other focus issues: water and education. ✨ Launching a new deep-water well is always a ma ✨ Launching a new deep-water well is always a magical moment for us and the partner community, but the joy of students celebrating the freedom of clean water at a new school well definitely takes it to the next level! 🎉 Last week we had the privilege of launching a brand new well at the Kalimanyungu Primary School in the Kasungu District of Malawi, thanks to a generous donation from the @thejosephfamilyfoundation . 👏 This means that over 650 students will no longer have to fetch unsafe water from long distances and risk getting sick. Just listen to the gratitude of the students in the video - their joy speaks volumes! He especially appreciates the impact it has on parents. “It takes a heavy burden off of them and then it's up to the children to be aware and do well.” The program being in its first year in Burkina Faso, he looks forward to continuing to see the impact it has on his students.
