Power Student Spotlight: Osward Cosmas

In the face of hardship, hope emerged for Oswald Cosmas through The Sonder Project’s Education is Power program. Oswald’s story begins with adversity, as he was forced to drop out of school in Grade 9 due to financial constraints. Despite his parents’ efforts‑‑who are hardworking farmers‑‑they struggled to make ends meet, leaving little room for Oswald’s education. “I worked hard, farming with my family and selling our produce, but it was never enough to pay for my school fees,” shared Oswald.

In 2021, Oswald was sponsored by The Sonder Project’s Education is Power program. One of his teachers, Ms. Wezi Msowoya, witnessed the impact firsthand. “His whole life has changed, and he is utilizing this opportunity very well. Oswald’s dedication reflected in his improved grades and consistent attendance, marks a significant turnaround in his education trajectory.”  Fast forward to his Senior year of secondary school at Chilanga CDSS School in Malawi, Oswald stands at the pinnacle of his class, ranking first out of 46 students! His mother who left school in Grade 8 and father in Grade 3 are extremely proud.

He envisions a future where he attends University and fulfills his lifelong ambition of becoming a doctor. As Oswald humbly acknowledged, “it would be impossible for me to attend school without The Sonder Project.” Oswald’s journey through education has been a testament to determination and the transformative power of opportunity.
